Believe UA is a mentoring program designed to set students up for success, both in the classroom and out. With an emphasis on providing freshman and sophomore undergraduate students an essential connection point for guidance, developmental support and conscious care during their early years at the Capstone; Believe UA intentionally matches peer mentors, who have learned the keys to success, with those students who may need additional guidance.

Students participating in the program enroll in Mentoring HES 225, a 3-credit-hour course that involves exploration of personal growth as well as leadership development and facilitates peer mentoring relationships that will enhance student success and character development. The course focuses on academics, social life and financial management, in addition to physical and spiritual well-being. Students meet with program leadership and are then intentionally matched with a peer mentor who has learned the keys to success and with whom the student shares some commonality. Outside of the classroom, students meet weekly to foster their connection.

Believe UA has served more than 1,500 undergraduate students who have shown higher persistence rates, demonstrated significant improvements in their grade point averages for the semester and reported greater levels of confidence in navigating the University environment and connecting with campus resources.

To participate in the program and receive a peer mentor, register for HES 225 through myBama. For questions about Believe UA, call 205-348-4015 or email believeua@ua.edu. If interested in joining the program after two weeks into the semester, contact the Believe UA program manager Jess Mitchell.
