The Advisory Council on Wellness was established in 2017 as an appointed group of students that serves to advise the Associate Vice President for Student Health and Wellbeing as to the salient issues and concerns directly related to student wellness and health. The Advisory Council recognizes the multifaceted nature of health and wellbeing and serves to:

  • Represent and communicate student interests regarding health and wellbeing to the associate vice president for Student Health and Wellbeing.
  • Promote effective communication and consultation with various student groups and organizations concerned with student health and wellbeing.
  • Foster the awareness and knowledge of evidence-based information to various student groups and organizations related to student health and wellbeing.

The Advisory Council on Wellness is comprised of a total of 10-12 undergraduate and graduate students who reflect a broad range of student involvement, demographics, and interests. Since its inception, the Advisory Council on Wellness has played a major role in the development and implementation of the Alabama Model of Student Health and Wellbeing, the development and implementation of a student wellbeing newsletter, and in a number of presentations to organizations and professional conferences to address the issues of student health and wellbeing.

The landmark and signature contribution of the Advisory Council to UA is the annual white paper that explores the contemporary issues of student health and wellbeing for UA students. Previous white papers have addressed issues on mental health and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the academic and psychological wellbeing of students. Recommendations generated in the white papers have been implemented to increase resources, programs, and services to respond to the health and wellness needs of students.

Membership to the Advisory Council on Wellness is by appointment each year by the associate vice president of Student Health and Wellbeing. A call for applications for vacant Advisory Council seats is made in February of each year with selections made in March.
