Healthy Relationships/Sexual Health Strategic Team

Charges

  • Explore and recommend approaches (strategies, practices, policies) to changing the culture among UA students to healthier attitudes and practices regarding healthy relationships & sexual health.

Strategies

  • Providing leadership in developing and adopting best practices in relationship and sexual health issues from current literature and benchmarks.
  • Assessing the process of media relations as it pertains to HRSH.
  • Provide annual update to the Student Affairs Staff Development Day regarding current HRSH conditions of UA.
  • Promoting understanding and collaboration across the Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Financial Affairs divisions to engagestudents in critical thinking regarding student health and well-being as it relates to healthy relationships and sexual health issues on this campus.
  • Address healthy relationships and sexual health issues from the Education, Environment and Enforcement perspectives regarding campus policies, campus culture, and programmatic opportunities among stakeholders.
  • Address the diverse needs of the various student populations of UA while embracing cultural differences and practices.
  • Develop an advisory subgroup to the student peer health educators group, Project Health, specific to HRSH issues.
  • Implement a method for evaluating programs and activities

Current actions

  • Renew the effort (unsuccessful in 2006-2007) to develop a website that will focus UA students on using goask.alice.com which provides relevant information about the Tuscaloosa community.
  • Conduct a workshop for faculty and staff on sexual health issues in May to make more staff aware of the issues on our campus.
  • Sexual Responsibility Week – team collaborated with the Women’s Resource Center theater group, Unscripted, to present a program to the UA students on Healthy Relationships.
  • Exploring ways to provide UA Faculty and Staff with the necessary means to identify distressed students early and refer them for help.

Past accomplishments

  • Discussed issues generated by the publicity of the Trojan Survey, the availability for contraceptive services to students, and the best ways to market programs on sexual health issues to students, and supported Sexual Awareness Week planning.
  • Championed the development of a new program using an episode of Grey’s Anatomy to encourage critical thinking among students about sexual health.
