Charge

  • Explore and recommend approaches (strategies, practices, policies) to changing the culture among UA students to healthier attitudes and practices regarding alcohol and other drug use

 

Strategies:

  • Providing leadership in adopting and developing best practices in prevention to address alcohol and other drug use issues on campus from the literature
  • Assessing the process and student learning outcomes related to the alcohol and other drug use initiatives and programs
  • Promoting understanding and  collaboration across the Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Financial Affairs divisions to engage students in critical thinking regarding student health and well-being as it relates to alcohol and other drug use issues on campus
  • Addressing alcohol and other drug use issues from the Education, Environment and Enforcement perspectives regarding campus policies, campus culture, programmatic opportunities among stakeholders
  • Providing a mechanism for recommendations from a diverse group of faculty and staff to the Vice Presidents of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs.

Current Actions of the Alcohol and Other Drug Strategic Health Team

  • Discussing the alcohol policy and exploring the possibility of establishing a centralized location for the policy.
  • Assessing the campus prevention and intervention programs and practices.

 

Past Accomplishments

    • Recommend AlcoholEdu as the foundational cornerstone for the alcohol prevention efforts on campus.  AlcoholEdu is an online alcohol education course that is required by all freshmen students. In 2006, the first year of implementation AlcoholEdu, 94 % of the freshman class completed the course.  As a result of our comprehensive efforts with the establishment of the Strategic Health Teams, UA won the 2006 Outside the Classroom Prevention Excellence Award.
    • Recommend that academic affairs complete a “best practices” White Paper analyses.  Dr. Celia Lo and Dr. Stuart Usdan were contacted.  A white paper by Dr. Celia Lo, A Comprehensive Plan to Promote Student Learning at UA by Curtailing ‘Recreational’ Drug Use and Alcohol Misuse”, was presented to the Alcohol Strategic Health Team.
    • Contacted the Pharmacy faculty from the Department of Family Medicine in the College of Community Health Sciences to develop facts sheets on the misuse of prescription drugs, illicit drugs, and mixture of drug and alcohol.  22 handouts have been developed and finalized for printing and distribution.
